1. Introduction 1.1 VSLook Version 1.0.0 is a utility that allows the user to view the header information on a number of the more commonly used DOS and MS Windows applications. 1.2 Output can be viewed using the integral viewer or the standard screen. Normal DOS redirection is provided. 2. Conventions 2.1 Bold is used for program names i.e. VSLook. 2.2 [] is used for user interaction i.e. [Do This]. Do not type the brackets. 2.3 <> is used for keys to be pressed i.e. . Do not type the brackets. 3. Installation 3.1 VSLook is best installed on a hard disk but will function from the supplied floppy disk. 3.2 It consist of the following files, each of which is necessary to run the program. VSLook.exe - The main program. esoteric.ini - Used by all esoteric programs to set up control data. May be blank or contain information about esoteric programs. esoteric.msg - This contains standard information used by all esoteric programs and is a method of reducing the required disk space on users systems. VSLook.pif - This allows VSLook to run under Microsoft Windows it may be customised by the user, and is not necessary for purely DOS usage. install.bat - Used to install the programs to a hard disk and is not required after installation. 3.3 To install the programs to a hard disk, [insert the floppy diskette into the floppy drive]. Change to the floppy drive by typing [a:] or [b:] and pressing . Type [install] and press , the install script will then use the built in defau lts, these are to copy files to c:\esoteric. If an alternative drive and directory is required, type [install] followed by the new details i.e. [d:\utils] or [d:\esoteric] and press . The full drive and path must be entered. 3.4 If using the floppy diskette to run the program, a backup should be made and this used. The master copy should be housed securely. 4. Operation 4.1 All that is necessary to view a file's header is to type VSLook followed by the name of the file and any optional parameters e.g. [VSLook filename.ext -d] 4.2 The filename may either be the full drive and path name or the home directory filename i.e. c:\docs\filename.ext or filename.ext. 4.3 Should the file not be of a type catered for then only standard information will be displayed. 4.4 VSLook has been provided with an integral viewer that is extremely useful for viewing the information about MS Windows programs. To use this facility append -d to the command line. 4.5 Should the viewer not be used and there be more information than can be displayed on a single screen then a pause after each full screen can be implemented using the -p option. The pause and viewer options are mutually exclusive. 4.6 By typing VSLook -s the list of currently supported file types is displayed. 5.
